Traditionally, many of us make the New Year resolutions for self-improvement. As the end of the following year approaches, we tend to reflect on our accomplishments and things we can do to better ourselves. How many times did you make a list promising yourself that next year you will eat more veggies, go to the gym, read more books, travel more…? Resolutions are easy and fun to make, but they can be difficult to maintain. The great importance of resolutions is that they help us reflect on our achievements, where are we now and where do we want to be in the future. They are one of the best ways for goal setting.

But what about the New Years resolutions for your career and your professional success? What steps will you take to get your professional life into better shape? Here are a few simple and achievable resolutions to consider for 2017, and beyond:

Make a list of all your goals

Set realistic goals. Brainstorm all of the changes you want to make and be specific about them. For example, don’t seat as a goal to find a new job. Instead, think about what it is that makes you unhappy in your current workplace. Is it a lack of free time, lack of flexibility, low salary or inability of a promotion? Then you will find out what kind of work position will bring you professional satisfaction, and you can start hunting for it.

Also, it is important to make an action plan with measurable and manageable monthly objectives. Be truthful about your abilities and time frames. You can start by setting weekly and monthly goals, and then move forward. Don’t forget to prioritize your goals, and focus on one goal at a time.

Keep learning

It sounds clishé, but it is never too late to learn, progress and develop. The job market today is more complex and expansive than ever. If you don’t keep up with new skills and knowledge, you will easily be benchmarked against your peers in every role you work in.

Sometimes, you will just need more education to get promoted or land a long-desired job. Maybe you will need to get bachelors or an MBA degree. With the advent of online learning, there are many options to fit in your classes with your budget and work schedule. And never forget that fundamental skills nowadays are computer literacy and knowledge of foreign languages. So why don’t take French class or start learning it online on Duolingo?

Network more and maintain an online presence

If you haven’t done it already, update your online business profiles such as LinkedIn, and start connecting with people from your business niche. Create visible and steady online presence. You never know where your next job opportunity may come from.

Make holiday card and send it to your colleagues and business partners. Schedule coffee or lunch with co-workers after holidays, go to seminars, work on a project with someone you don’t know very well, communicate directly if possible and not via e-mail.

Building your professional network can help you become more recognizable in your industry, help you make valuable connections, gain new skills and learn new things.

Make a brand out of yourself. How? By constantly improving your skills and learning, as said before. Build credibility through sharing your knowledge, networking, interviews, blog writing…

You can find a few favorite sources and subscribe to them. You need to have a feel what is going on, what are fresh trends so that you don’t miss a beat.
